Earlier this week, the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reported that the Arkansas Medical Marijuana Commission had finalized the process for accepting applications for medical marijuana sellers and growers.

The Commission, which has five members, developed an application scoring method on Tuesday that breaks down 100 points that each applicant can earn into sections.Sections include applicant qualifications, financial disclosure, operations plan, and a section focused on operating marijuana facilities in compliance with laws and rules. The latter section is where more than half the total points are.

Commissioner Stephen Carroll commented, “We need to make it clear on the front end to the applicant exactly what’s expected of them.”

There was some opposition as both commissioners James Miller and Travis Story voted against the proposal with Story citing that commissioners should be able to weigh sections differently.

Department of Finance and Administration attorney Joel DiPippa commented, “I think ultimately lawsuits are probably inevitable at some point. But having a way to score it that’s fair and brings all of the commissioners’ input is something that’s needed.”

There’s only roughly three more weeks to go until the application period opens on June 30th and will remain open for 90 days. The state’s commission will distribute a total of 32 dispensary licenses and 5 cultivation facility licenses.
According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, Arkansas is one of 29 states that allow for comprehensive public medical marijuana programs.
