Canada is on track to making marijuana recreationally legal next year, but that doesn’t mean the country thinks it’s completely safe.

Apparently Canadian officials have warned that there is no safe way to use cannabis. The country has released guidelines to help limit the “real health risks” associated with marijuana use. These risks include memory problems as well as drug abuse and car crashes.

So what exactly are the guidelines? They were published in the American Journal of Public Health and the top guideline is to refrain from all marijuana use. There is encouragement for young people to not take the drug and to abstain from it. If people can’t follow this guideline, they encourage people to be older and to use a lower dose of it. Another guideline is to avoid smoking it and take the drug another way.

The published guidelines include ten altogether and experts are hoping they will help limit the risks for cannabis users. The number one guideline is to not use marijuana because there is no safe to take the substance.

According to Dr. Benedikt Fischer, a senior scientist at the Center for Addiction and Mental Health, “Factual, science-based information can provide guidance to cannabis users to make choices that reduce both immediate and long-term risks to their health.”

Dr. Laurent Marcoux, of the Canadian Medical Association has said, “The CMA continues to recommend a broad public health policy approach focused on preventing problematic drug use; ensuring the availability of assessment and treatment services for those who wish to stop using; and harm reduction to increase the safety for those who are using.”
