An Australian top dermatologist is fighting severe pimple break outs with a breakthrough idea: cannabis-derived skin solution.

Rod Sinclair is conducting a clinical trial of a new topical acne treatment that is an anti-inflammatory. It is based on chemicals found in marijuana known as cannabidiols.

He told 9News, “It is an anti-inflammatory. It particularly targets some of the molecules in the inflammatory pathways that are involved in acne and pimples.”

The product is manufactured by Botanix and is being used on patients with moderate to severe acne where the skin expert is observing its effectiveness.

Sinclair believes acne “can really have a profound effect on self-esteem. A lot people with severe acne start to withdraw socially.”

The volunteers in the study are applying the tonic to the skin daily for a month. Researchers will then examine if their skin has improved and if there were any side effects.

Users do not have to worry about getting high though. “The chemical we are using for this study is not the chemical that produces the high. So it is not the THC. It is the cannabidiol,” Prof Sinclair sad.

“One of the exclusion criteria is we don’t want people smoking while they are on the study because that is going to confuse the results,” he also said.
