Cannabidiol, otherwise known as CBD, is being studied as a potential therapy for many things including chronic pain, and it’s also being studied to treat psychosis.

CBD could be a “new class of treatment” for psychosis and there is a first clinical trial taking place that is exploring the effects. The trial has found that CBD could relieve symptoms in patients that have psychosis.

Professor Philip McGuire, from King’s College London’s Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience, who is the lead author of the study, has said that conventional drugs acted by blocking biological receptors for mood-altering chemical dopamine.

“However, dopamine is not the only neurotransmitter whose function is altered in psychosis, and in some patients dopamine function may be relatively normal,” he also said.
