Cura Cannabis, a marijuana startup company from Portland, is suing unnamed people behind social media accounts that have made rape allegations against the CEO of the company.

Cura Cannabis CEO Nitin Khanna left the company last week regarding “personal allegations against Nitin that arose several years before the company was founded.”

According to the company, the CEO had handed off operational responsibilities to others due to the allegations. They “have become a distraction for the company’s mission,” said the company.

A lawsuit has been filed in Multnomah County Circuit Court where Cura says that people, identifed as John Does, behind Instagram and Twitter accounts have for several months were harrassing the company and Mr. Khanna by claiming a past history of rape allegations.

The lawsuit has called the allegations “demonstrably false, defamatory, and made with malicious intent.”

“Cura has brought this lawsuit in order to bring an end to this defamation campaign,” the company wrote, and to expose the people behind the anonymous accounts.

It was in 2014 that Mr. Khanna settled a lawsuit by his fiance’s hairdresser who said that he raped her on the day of his wedding two years prior. Based on DNA evidence, sexual contact was made between the two but prosecutors concluded there wasn’t enough evidence to prove the sexual contact was not consensual.

“That is not to say that the sexual assault didn’t happen exactly as the victim describes,” county attorneys wrote. “The problem we have is that we cannot prove this case beyond a reasonable doubt.”

Cura employs more than 250 and forecast $120 million in revenue this year.
