The city of Denver announced this week that the city has received its first application for a business to allow the use of marijuana on site.

The place is called “The Coffee Joint” and is planning to open its business this month. Though the place will open as a regular coffee shop, it will also have cannabis theme. The business will have wait awhile though however until it can get a special license approved to allow marijuana to be consumed on its premises.

The owner, Rita Tsalyuk, told 9News, that even though the name of the place has “joint” in the title, customers will not be allowed to smoke.

The place has no patio so keeping in line with the Colorado Clean Indoor Air Act, customers will only be allowed to use edibles or vaporizers in the future if the license is approved.

Co-owner Kirill Merkulov said, “We’re are excited about being the first. I think this is an industry not to be scared of anymore.”

“Employees will be trained to spot over-intoxification, at which point the patron will be asked to, politely, leave, and possible given some options to get home,” remarked Merkulov.

“My husband and business partner have ownership of a dispensary right next door,” Tsalyuk also said.

Coffee Joint is located at 1130 Yuma Court and plans to only allow adults 21 and over into the establishment.
