An Illinois state Senate committee has advanced the idea of Illinois voters being able to vote to legalize recreational marijuana in November.

The catch is that it would be non-binding. This means the ballot question would work more like a statewide public opinion and would not legalize the drug even if a majority of the voters vote to approve.

According to state Sen. Bill Cunningham, D-Chicago, the ballot question would “bring the public into the debate” and “give them an opportunity to register their opinion.”

Illinois lawmakers would debate the proposal in Springfield.

“Of all of the issues that we as a state are facing and that we have the opportunity to present to our citizens in terms of an advisory referendum, I would frankly put this one very low down the list,” remarked state Sen. Chris Nybo, R-Elmhurst.
