Women all over could be going “Hmmm” after reading this article. It’s no secret that periods for most women are painful. They come with nasty cramps that can often be debilitating for some. So what if there were something to help ease the pain? Sure there’s over the counter pain medicines, but most of the time they barely work. That’s why medical marijuana may be the answer.

Women in the state of New York may soon be able to use medical marijuana for their cramps.

Apparently the New York State Assembly is considering a bill to add dysmenorrhea, which is the technical name for period cramps, to the current list of conditions for which doctors can legally authorize a patient to use medical marijuana. Conditions already on the list include cancer and HIV.

Under New York’s law, only patients with the specific medical conditions named in the law can access medical marijuana in the state, according to Newsweek.

Linda Rosenthal, the state’s Assemblywoman has said in the bill that severe cases of dysmenorrhea can be “debilitating.”

“Medical marijuana can alleviate many of the painful effects of dysmenorrhea.”
According to Newsweek, even actress Whoopi Goldberg is in support of medical marijuana for period pain.

Dr. Charles Pollack, an emergency-medicine physician at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, as well as the director of the university’s Lambert Center for the Study of Medicinal Cannabis and Hemp, has said to Live Science, “Though there are good data showing that marijuana can help people with neuropathic pain, the pain from menstrual cramps doesn’t fall into this category. He went on to say, “It’s not out of the realm of the possible” that the cannabis could be helpful for women with menstrual cramps.

Pollack notes that the female reproductive tract, and, in particular, the uterus and the lining of the uterus, has an “abundance” of endocannabinoid receptors.
Marijuana’s chemicals cannabinoids can bind to these receptors.

“It’s also possible that women with painful menstrual cramps benefit from the anxiolytic, or anti-anxiety, effects of marijuana” Pollack said.
