According to Statistics Canada, Canadians spent an estimated $4.63 billion on the drug in 2017.

The agency announced on Thursday the figure and also revealed that nearly 5 million (4.9 million in actuality) people in Canada between the ages of 15 and 64 had purchased both medicinal marijuana and recreational marijuana.

Medical marijuana is already legal in Canada and the country is expected to legalize recreational marijuana this summer.

According to the statistics agency. the average Canadian cannabis user spent about C$1,200 on the drug last year, mostly on non-medical marijuana.

The Statistics Canada report goes back all the way to 1961 and tracks the consumption of marijuana.

The report also found that almost all of the marijuana consumed in Canada came from within the country.
