Having a medical marijuana program isn’t cheap, even if the benefits are nice.

Regulators in the state of Ohio have said they will need another $5.6 million this year for a medical marijuana tracking database, a toll-free help line, and any expected legal costs to respond to lawsuits and complaints regarding the state’s licensing process.

Both the state’s Board of Pharmacy and the Department of Commerce planned to ask the state controlling board on Monday for another $6 million for the next two years for the state’s Medical Marijuana Control Program. The state budget just recently passed $5 million last month.

Ohio is expecting to open dispensaries by September 2018 and officials are setting up the program. The state’s medical marijuana law allow individuals to buy and use marijuana if their condition is under the 21 medical conditions covered, and if a physician recommends it.
