Starting today, Minnesota patients who have post-traumatic stress disorder, otherwise known as PTSD, will be allowed to buy medical marijuana.

Dr. Kyle Kingsley, the CEO of Minnesota Medical Solutions, commented, “I think it’s going to be a pretty modest increase in patient numbers. But the many thousands of folks in Minnesota that suffer from PTSD now have access, and that’s a really important step — even if only a few are taking the first steps forward here early in the process.”

Now that PTSD counts as a qualifying condition, Kingsley expects the number of patients to grow in the state’s program.

“A good number of patients who are suffering intractable pain or some other condition who also have PTSD have been benefiting from cannabis as far as their PTSD symptoms go. So we are definitely encouraged this is going to be helpful for some people suffering with PTSD,” Kingsley explained.

Minnesota made medical marijuana legal in the state a little over two years and has had one of the strictest medical marijuana programs in the United States. There are eleven qualifying conditions that include cancer and MS.

Until today, the only acceptable forms of marijuana were in a pill, liquid, or oil form. Now the state’s two manufacturers are allowed to sell patches, balms, and even lotions.
