Draft legislation that was introduced this Thursday has revealed that Quebec’s Liberal government has a zero tolerance for driving while high on marijuana.

Under the drag legislation, the province would authorize police to test the saliva of drivers and would allow police to suspend the license of anyone for 90 days, who has a trace of marijuana or illicit drugs.

It doesn’t seem that the province is in a rush to see marijuana legalized in the country. The Quebec government has even asked Ottawa to extend the July 1, 2018, deadline for legalization.

Quebec Public Health Minister Lucie Charlebois, who is the Liberal in charge of the legalization file, has said, “There are people who consume cannabis. We can’t avoid it. We can’t pretend it doesn’t exist.”

“The proposed measures aim to limit risk and mischief linked to abuse of this substance and to fight the trivialization of this product. We will be prudent and restrictive from the start.”
