The states of California and Oregon, as well as other marijuana-friendly states in the nation, want to have a meeting with Jeff Sessions to resolve Cannabis conflict between federal and state laws.

Currently marijuana is still illegal at the federal level, despite more than half of the states in the U.S. having legalized marijuana in some way.

California, Oregon, Pennsylvania, and Illinois had their state treasurers tell Sessions in a letter this week that businesses and banks need greater clarity on how federal law enforcement will respond to the growing legalization trend.

California Treasurer John Chiang released the letter that was sent and remarked on how an absence of those federal rules “leaves the industry and financial institutions in the dark.”

Despite marijuana being legal in many states, some banks do not want to deal with the industry.

The letter argues that financial institutions need “some comfort that they will not be prosecuted, or lose access to customer assets, simply for banking this industry.”

The letter was also signed by several cannabis industry groups and the Maine Credit Union League.
