Many South Africans were rejoicing this week after the country’s highest court legalized the use of marijuana for adults in private places.

Pro-marijuana activists were celebrating in the streets and chanting “Weed are free now” after the decision.

Previously South Africa’s government had opposed its legalization, arguing the drug was “harmful” to people’s health.

Deputy Chief Justice Raymond Zondo said: “It will not be a criminal offense for an adult person to use or be in possession of cannabis in private for his or her personal consumption.”

He also added however that the drug will remain illegal to use in public as well as to sell and supply it.

South Africa is now the third country in Africa to legalize cannabis, following Lesotho in September 2017, and in Zimbabwe this past April.
