According to a new Gallup poll released this week, 45% of Americans have tried marijuana at least once in their lifetime. This is the highest percentage that Gallup has recorded since 1969 when it first started to ask Americans the question.

One particularly interesting thing about this year’s survey is that Gallup found young male adults with household incomes of less than $30k annually where the ones to most likely say they currently use marijuana. The poll also found that as people age, the consumption rate starts to decline.

The first time Gallup asked the question in 1969, the result was a modest 4%.

It’s been nearly 50 years since then, and the increase in supporting legalization has been huge. According to Gallup, the rise in consumption these past 5 decades is paralled by this increase in support. It was last year that Gallup found that 60% of Americans are in favor of supporting the legalization of the drug.
