Marijuana sales data has revealed that there was a staggering $18 billion worth of cannabis products in 2020, a 67% increase over 2019 sales.

Last year during coronavirus, Americans had been turning to marijuana in record numbers to deal with the pandemic.

According to state tax and revenue data acquired and analyzed by Leafly, nationwide sales of medical and adult-use marijuana increased by 67% over 2019.

Americans purchased $17.9 billion in cannabis products over the past calendar year. This is $7.2 billion more than the $10.7 billion in sales the previous year.
Most governors had declared marijuana an essential good in their states and with lock downs, many customers had responded by stocking up for weeks at a time.

Even in Massachusetts, where Gov. Charlie Baker’s statewide shutdown order temporarily halted all retail operations of in April, cannabis stores still saw a 75% annual sales gain over 2019.

It was last October that multi-state dispensary operator Verilife surveyed more than 2,000 Americans and found that 72% of respondents named the Covid-19 pandemic as the leading cause of stress in their lives.

Almost 40% said they have used cannabis to cope with that burnout and roughly 37% said they have used CBD. A further 29% said they have considered using marijuana to lower their stress level this year.

Nine state more than doubled their 2019 sales totals last year: Arkansas, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Maine, New Jersey, North Dakota, Ohio, and Pennsylvania.

The top adult-use states were California, Colorado, Washington, and Florida.
