While many marijuana enthusiasts are celebrating April 20th happily. the day is traditionally connected to an increase in fatal car accidents after the celebrations are over.

JAMA International Medicine conducted a study that has revealed that fatal accidents on the night of April 20th are higher during the same hours a week before and a week after that date. Researchers used 25 years of data on car crashes in the U.S. to find this shocking reveal.

“These crashes really don’t have to happen,” remarked senior author, Dr. Donald A. Redelmeier, a professor of medicine at the University of Toronto. “In the Netherlands, they’ve had legalized marijuana for years, but they have many more interventions — speed cameras, radar, sobriety checkpoints. The roads in the Netherlands are now much safer than those in the U.S.”
