Residents of Baltimore have something to be happy about, that is if they have marijuana possession related cases.
The city’s top prosecutor announced this week that Baltimore will no longer prosecute any cases that are related to marijuana possession. This is regardless of how much or what the person’s criminal record looks like.
According to the Associated Press, Baltimore’s state attorney Marilyn Mosby, is also seeking to have the courts vacate around 5,000 prior marijuana convictions going back to 2011.
“No one who is serious about public safety can honestly say that spending resources to jail people for marijuana use is a smart way to use our limited time and money,” Mosby declared.
According to Mosby, sending people for marijuana possession to jail is an “ongoing moral failure.”
“Communities are still sentenced under these unjust policies, still paying a price for behavior that is already legal for millions of Americans,” she said. “That’s why I’m moving to vacate these cases.”
