According to a study, marijuana that has relatively high levels of CBD may be less risky for users to smoke over a long term basis.

A study on mice has revealed that the cannabidiol ingredient may counteract some of marijuana’s harmful effects.

Dr. Ken Mackie is a professor in the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences at Indiana University and is the author of the study.

According to Mackie, the study “suggests that strains of cannabis with similar levels of CBD and THC would pose significantly less long-term risk due to CBD’s protective effect against THC.”

In the study, adolescent mice were injected with frequent doses of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) which produces the “high” effect in marijuana. The mice receiving a combined daily dose of THC as well as cannabidiol (CBD) did not experience the negative effects.

“This is the first study in a rigorously controlled animal model to find that CBD appears to protect the brain against the negative effects of chronic THC,” Mackie said.
