Despite marijuana becoming legal on January 1st, Federal agents will still have the authority to seize the drug, even in tiny amounts.

Although the drug will be legal in the Golden State, the possession of marijuana is still illegal at eight Border patrol checkpoints in the state because the drug is still classified as a controlled substance.

Ryan Yamasaki, an assistant chief of the Border Patrol’s San Diego sector stated, “Prior to Jan. 1, it’s going to be the same after Jan. 1, because nothing changed on our end. If you’re a federal law enforcement agency, you uphold federal laws.”
