Marijuana advocates decided to be very giving this week by offering D.C. Council members free marijuana on Tuesday.

The advocates stood outside of the Wilson Building demanding that the city’s elected officials act more aggressively to lobby Congress to lift a 3.5 year old budget provision that prohibits the legalized sale of marijuana in the city.

Rep. Andy Harris authored the provision that was approved in late 2014. While it legalized the possession and home cultivation of small amounts of marijuana it also did not address sales.

“We voted for Initiative 71 to legalize marijuana. We voted for the Council members and they should respect what we voted for. I know they don’t have control over Congress’ decision, but they can go to Congress members and say, ‘Hey, this is what we want and this is what our constituents want and you should respect us,’” said Lisa Scott, who heads the new D.C. Cannabis Business Association.
