It was at the end of June that the Iowa Department of Public Health awarded a cannabis manufacturing license to Iowa Relief.

Iowa Relief intends to grow and process marijuana in Cedar Rapids.

Acreage Holdings, a New York firm who is the parent company of Iowa Relief, says on its website that it has operations in 12 other states, “and we’re just getting started.”

Prior to this announcement, MedPharm Iowa was the only company in the state allowed to gro wand process medical marijuana.

Four firms applied in June for a single permit to compete with MedPharm as medical marijuana producers. Iowa Relief was chosen.

Acreage Holdings President George Allen told the Register that his company is willing to move to Iowa as “with the full anticipation that over time, cannabis will gain acceptance as a treatment for medical conditions.”

The company plans to build a new facility in an industrial area on Cedar Rapids’ southwest side.

“As the program stands today, though, with its restrictive laws, it will not serve Iowans as intended,” MedPharm owner Chris Nelson stated. “We hope that, together with Iowa Relief, we can provide qualified Iowans with the products they need and continue to champion a more inclusive, effective program that improves the quality of life for all those impacted.”
