The state of Illinois saw $35.9 million in sales of marijuana in March as demand was higher than the supply. This is compared to the $34.8 million the state saw in February.

January was the first month of recreational weed sales for Illinois and remains the top month so far at $39.2 million, according to figures from the Illinois Department of Financial & Professional Regulation.

Daily sales in January were $1.27 million, then $1.2 million in February and even lower at $1.16 million in March.

Sales to out-of-state users totaled 25 percent. This is compared with 26 percent in February and 22 percent in January.

Sales last month were most likely impacted by the coronavirus outbreak with dispensaries having to change their policies and adopt social distancing measures. Some stores saw massive medical marijuana sales as consumers stockpiled.

Kris Krane, president of 4Front Ventures, a multi-state pot firm that operates the Mission dispensary in South Chicago, told the Chicago Sun Times that the store experienced a “big rush on product” when the governor’s order was issued.

“Three straight months of consistent adult use cannabis sales show there is, and will continue to be, strong support and demand from consumers,” said Toi Hutchinson, senior adviser for cannabis control to Gov. J.B. Pritzker.
