In a shocking threat, anti-marijuana advocates in the state of Illinois have said they would kill their dogs if marijuana became legal in the state.

The police have reasoned that if marijuana becomes legal, the police will no longer be able to use the dogs.

Hundreds of dogs could potentially be euthanized if the police complete their threat because the dogs would not be able to be retrained. Some Illinois officials have announced that they’ll have to kill them. This could mean the killing of 275 dogs.

The Director of K-9 Training Academy Chad Larner said to the Pantagraph that retraining would be “extreme abuse” since their original training is deeply ingrained.

According to Steve Petrilli of the Normal Police Department, “At this point, they’re trained on five different odors. Once they’re programmed with that, you can’t just deprogram them.”
