New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said on Monday that he supports the legalization of recreational marijuana in the state.
“Let’s legalize the adult use of recreational marijuana, once and for all,” Cuomo said during a speech in Manhattan.
The New York Times tweeted, “Breaking News: Governor Andrew Cuomo said he would push to legalize recreational marijuana in New York early next year, following the lead of 10 other states.”
It was earlier this year that the Governor had commissioned a study to see if the state should or should not legalize the drug. He also established a task force to draft legislation to regulate it.
The New York Post has also reported that Cuomo is looking to see if people arrested previously for marijuana possession should have their arrests dropped from their criminal records.
“The goal of this administration is to create a model program for regulated adult-use cannabis — and the best way to do that is to ensure our final proposal captures the views of everyday New Yorkers,” said spokesman Tyrone Stevens to the New York Post.
