This week the Louisiana Senate approved a bill to give patients in the state’s medical marijuana program the ability to legally smoke cannabis flower.

Currently medical marijuana patients are able to vaporize cannabis preparations via a “metered-dose inhaler,” but cannot access whole-plant flower. Smoking is not allowed in the state.

The bill cleared the Senate by an overwhelming vote of 26-11 after being cleared in the House.

This week the governor of Minnesota had signed a large-scale spending bill that includes a provision to add smokable cannabis to the state’s medical marijuana program.

Louisiana’s Governor had said in a radio appearance last week that he believes marijuana legislation “is going to happen in Louisiana eventually.”

Gov. John Bel Edwards (D) said on his live radio program that cannabis legalization “is going to happen in Louisiana eventually.”

“In the past, as a legislator and as governor, I’ve been opposed to legalizing recreational marijuana,” the governor said on the monthly program, Ask the Governor. “I will tell you, I have come to believe that it is going to happen in Louisiana eventually.

Two other recent polls in the state, including one personally commissioned by a top Republican lawmaker—have found that a majority of voters are in favor of legalizing marijuana for adult use
