New Jersey residents will be hitting the polls November 7th for the state’s gubernatorial election and cannabis may be a big topic.

Despite the fact that legal marijuana is not even on the ballot next month, the way people vote could still effect the drug’s future in the state.

Democrat Phil Murphy has called for marijuana legislation as a solution to social injustice and the higher arrest rate that Blacks have faced over whites for minor drug offenses.

“If it doesn’t pass the social justice test, you can’t talk about revenue implications, and the fact of the matter is that we have the widest white-nonwhite gap of persons incarcerated in New Jersey,” he said during a debate this week.

Republican Kim Guadagno says she will decriminalize the plant but still doesn’t want you to legally buy it.

She said once, “There is a less intrusive way to solve the social injustice problem than legalizing drug dealers. I am wholly opposed to legalizing marijuana. Having said that, I do believe we can decriminalize it.”
