Sales of cannabis in Illinois are continuing to smash records. The state is now expecting over $1 billion in recreational weed sales and had hit a new record for sales in April.

According to the latest data available from the state’s Department of Revenue, Illinois recorded almost $115 million in sales in the month of April alone. This was the highest-grossing month since cannabis became legal in 2020.

In April of 2020, Illinois had seen only $37 million in sales as a comparison.

In total, the state has now generated $1,064,750,968 in recreational cannabis sales since legalization took place. Of those sales, nearly $777 million were made to in-state residents, according to the Department of Revenue.

Illinois had also see another impressive record in the first quarter of 2021, with tax revenues for cannabis sales ($86 million) exceeding those of liquor ($72 million) for the first time ever, according to Newsweek.

Officials have said that if these trends continue, the state could expect to surpass $1 billion in sales this year.

Not long ago Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers (D), had said he was sick of seeing tax revenue from cannabis sales go to neighboring states that have already legalized.

“Frankly I’m kind of tired of talking to the governor from Illinois,” he said in a video posted to Twitter. “Whenever I get with him, he thanks me for having Wisconsinites cross the border to buy marijuana.”
