California marijuana users may be happy to learn that with their smartphones they will be able to figure out if a dispensary is legit or not.

According to an L.A. Times report, the Bureau of Cannabis Control announced on Thursday a program that encourages licensed cannabis retailers to post QR codes in their store windows.

These codes can be scanned by prospective customers by using a QR code-enabled phone where their cellphone camera links the reader to the bureau’s online license system.

This will allow users to know if the store is licensed or not.

Consumers will be able to determine which retailers ”carry products that are tracked, tested and legal,” said bureau chief Lori Ajax.

By scanning the code, users can also check a retailer’s license information by visiting the bureau’s license search tool at CApotcheck.com.

United Cannabis Business Assn. Executive Director Ruben Honig remarked, “When voters approved Proposition 64, there was an immediate assumption that overnight, everywhere that sold cannabis was legal and safe.”

“Unfortunately, this couldn’t be further from the truth. California’s illicit market is nearly three times the size of its legal one and many consumers cannot tell the difference, leading them to unknowingly purchase untested and unregulated products that may put their health at risk,” he added.
