According to federal agents, a marijuana vending machine in Michigan has earned a man $2,000 a day.
Federal agents seized a unique vending machine form outside a Detroit home in April.
A complaint filed in federal court by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) claimed that the vending machine was stocked with marijuana and pills.
The accused owner, Marcellus Cornwell, told agents who raided his home on March 16 that he was earning up to $2,000 a day for last four years from the machine.
This equates to nearly $1.6 million per year, according to the court complaint.
Cornwell was released on a $10,000 unsecured bond and conditions that include travel restrictions, reporting requirements and other limitations. He has been banned from operating his vending machine.
“Whether it’s snacks that you’re thinking of having installed in your home or on the side of your home with the vending machine, just don’t do it,” U.S. District Magistrate Judge Jonathan J.C. Grey ordered Cornwell at his April 28 initial court appearance.
“This is a unique case that’s been brought to the court’s attention and the court is concerned about the ease with which you allegedly provided narcotics for others.”
The U.S. Attorney’s Office has charged Cornwell with being a felon in possession of a firearm, punishable by up to 10 years in prison.
ATF agents seized 18 guns and ammo from his home during their raid, according to the federal complaint.
Agents seized more than $12,700 in cash from Cornwell’s home. The complaint said Cornwell had an employee who also lived in his Detroit home and made the majority of his income from the marijuana vending machine.
