Although cannabis will not be available for months in Maryland, the state’s regulators just approved the first medical marijuana dispensary in the state. A Frederick company called the Wellness Institute of Maryland, now has authorization to open its doors immediately.

The Wellness Institute and owner Michael Kline, plan to start taking “pre-orders” for cannabis immediately. “We are fully equipped to deliver medicine as soon as we have it,” Kline commented.

According to Kline, the Wellness Institute of Maryland will operate more like a doctor’s office than a retail store, and the company has no plan to advertise to the public.

“Many, if not most people, won’t be interested in our model,” Kline said. “They would like to go in like it’s a strip mall or a 7-Eleven.”

Patients can sign up for an appointment by visiting Kline’s website or calling the company.

Only one firm is authorized to grow marijuana in the state and the first crop isn’t expected to be ready until after the Labor Day holiday.

Curio Wellness in Baltimore County is another grower waiting for approval but the commission has requested additional information from the company.

Curio CEO Michael Bronfein said the move was “regrettable,” and that inspectors never said he was missing any information.

“Our state of the art facility is ready. Every day the commission fails to provide our stage two license delays patients access to safe, reliable, and effective medicine.”
