It was a historical day on Thursday for the state of Massachusetts as a panel approved the very first recreational marijuana growing license.

The Cannabis Control Commission, which has five members, awarded the provisional Tier 3 cultivation license in a unanimous vote to Sira Naturals in Milford.

Reports had already indicated earlier in the week that Sira Naturals would likely get it and right the reports were.

The provisional license awarded does not permit the company to sell marijuana, but to grow it for recreational use. That means Sira Naturals can grow cannabis for the recreational market on 10,000 to 20,000 square feet at its existing cultivation facility in Milford.

“We are extraordinarily gratified by the decision,” said Michael Dundas, the CEO of Sira Naturals.

The state had expected July 1st to be the date when retail sales start but with only one license awarded now for growing, this is more than likely delayed.

“I’m staying as far away as possible from offering forecasting of timing, I’m sorry,” chairman Steven Hoffman remarked.
