In what many may argue is very unfair, the police department of Honolulu has sent letters to local medical marijuana patients and have ordered the to give up their guns.

The department has ordered the patients to “voluntarily surrender” their firearms due to having an MMJ status.

Police Chief Susan Ballard signed the letters, and informed the patients that they have 30 days upon the receipt of their letter to give up the firearms. Patients can turn them to the Honolulu police or transfer ownership.

It’s been only three months since the state’s first medical marijuana dispensary opened in Honolulu. This is also the first time that a law enforcement agency has proactively sought out state-registered medical marijuana patients and have ordered them to give up their guns.

Applicants who want to purchase a firearm have to complete the US Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF) Form 1140-0020 . It asks if the purchaser is “an unlawful user of, or addicted to, marijuana or any depressant, stimulant, narcotic drug, or any other controlled substance.”
