Recreational marijuana just became legal in the state of Michigan this month and the state department that regulates the marijuana industry has received a name change as a result.

The Bureau of Medical Marijuana Regulation is now losing the “medical” part to it and will now be called the Bureau of Marijuana Regulation.

This department has the responsibility of creating rules and regulations to govern the recreational marijuana industry in the state.

“While many other states have various licensing, regulation, and patient programs spread throughout different departments and agencies, BMR will keep marijuana-related services in one place in order to best enhance consumer protections and make regulations more efficient for business customers,” remarked Shelly Edgerton, director of the state’s Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs.

Legal documents will still spell marijuana the old way, with an “h” as in marihuana, but will keep it as marijuana otherwise.

The state’s new marijuana law allows for people 21 or older to use, possess and grow marijuana.

Michigan also launched a new website — michigan.gov/marijuana — with resources for both the medical and recreational marijuana communities.
