This January, dispensaries in Montana will have access to a statewide legal recreational marijuana market and they are already preparing for sales.

Collective Elevation has been selling medical marijuana in cities across the state but is now preparing to sell recreational marijuana starting on January 1st.

The dispensary is one among many that is preparing for statewide legal recreational marijuana sales starting in 2022, after the passage of House Bill 701.

“Different types of edibles for medical patients versus recreational patients, we have had to prepare through the state, because THC limits and stuff like that,” Kirsten Newstrom, assistant manager of the Missoula location, said to NBC Montana.

Newstrom says the regulations have been changing since HB 701 was approved last session.

“We had a meeting with Bozeman last month to try and figure out some of the stuff out like the QR codes and the differences between the medical and recreational edibles and things like that,” Newsome added. “We got some things figured out and then I hear from my boss that they have it changed now again.”

“That’s why we are going to get more security measures and more (point-of-sale) systems or the other POS system in place. We are definitely gearing up. We are going to have more staff on shift. We are definitely anticipating a very crazy busy beginning of the year,” Newstrom added.

Newstrom says, in all, upgrades have cost around $10,000 for the dispensary’s Missoula location.
