Many people in Nebraska want medicinal marijuana including State Senators Anna Wishart and Adam Morfeld.

A petition was launched this week in effort to legalize the drug in the state, with the creation of a campaign committee which will be lead by Wishart and Morfeld.

The group is aiming to put a proposed constitutional amendment before voters on the 2020 ballot.

“Today is the first step toward establishing a compassionate medical marijuana law for sick and suffering Nebraskans,” Wishart stated. “Thirty-two states have already adopted effective medical marijuana laws, and Nebraska will soon be joining their ranks.”

“I want to make sure we have a Plan B,” Wishart said. “I’m not a betting person, but if I were, I’d put money on voters passing it overwhelmingly.”

Another petition has also been filed already for 2020. The Nebraska Cannabis Initiative petition would give adults the right to use, grow, possess or distribute cannabis for any purpose and would allow minors to use it for medical purposes.

Bill Hawkins of the Nebraska Hemp Co. is one of the two sponsors of the cannabis petition. According to Hawkins, Wishart and Morfeld were “hijacking the people’s process.”

He added, “The game is on.”
