New Jersey State Senate President Steve Sweeney has said that he is confident they will get 21 votes.
In order to pass a measure that would legalize recreational marijuana in the state, the Senate needs 21 votes and the Assembly needs 41 votes.
Sweeney told POLITICO in an interview that the state could legalize marijuana recreationally by the end of September.
“I’m confident we’ll get to 21 and 41 (votes),” he exclaimed.
During the interview Sweeney also said he would prefer a lower tax rate than the 25% that New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy had proposed this year.
“I don’t want [the tax rate] to be 25 percent, because then you’re just going to keep the black market alive,” Sweeney told POLITICO. “If you tax it too high, you incentivize people to use the black market because you’ve raised the price too high.”
