It was this week that the Senate and Assembly in New Jersey approved the Jake Honig Compassionate Use Medical Cannabis Act.

This is a big overhaul of the state’s medical marijuana program. The bill would legalize edible forms of medical marijuana and increase the amount patients are allowed to purchase each month, from 2 ounces to 3 ounces.

The bill would also require patients to be recertified for the medical marijuana program each year rather than quarterly.

The Assembly passed the bill in an overwhelming vote of 66 to 5 with six abstentions. The Senate passed the bill 31 to 5.

“The medicinal uses of marijuana have been proven safe for years, and yet, in New Jersey we have arbitrarily restricted patients’ access since our program’s inception,” remarked bill sponsor Sen. Joseph Vitale, D-Middlesex.
