Growing like a weed: South Dakota remains top state for hemp acreage

By Melissa Goss, AgUpdate

South Dakota leads the nation in hemp production for the second straight year.

Ken Meyer, president of the South Dakota Industrial Hemp Association, said hemp grows well in the state because it’s situated at the right latitude, with the right climate, and had just the right amount of moisture in 2023.

Industrial hemp grown in open areas in South Dakota in 2023 totaled 3,200 acres, up 14% from 2022, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service, which released its national hemp report April 17.

Industrial hemp harvested in open areas totaled 2,900 acres, also up 14% from last year.

Meyer said they’re on track to have even more hemp harvested in the state this fall.

A Global Test to Explore the Benefits of Hemp

By Alexis Elmore – Site Selection Magazine

Over the course of one year, researchers in Italy’s Sicilian region aim to revolutionize the ways in which industrial hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) can provide a sustainable solution to materials commonly used across global industries.

Although botanically related to another cannabis sativa species known as marijuana, hemp holds less than 0.3% of the psychoactive component tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). In comparison, the entirety of the hemp plant provides a variety of uses conducive to everyday life around the world.
