Researchers at Washington State University have halted their development of a marijuana breath test due to their fear of the federal government.

The project had started in 2010 and researchers had hoped the breath test would help officers detect THC in users.

WSU professor Nicholas Lovrich remarked, “For this to be effective, we need to be able to test on real people. Unfortunately, that’s just not possible right now. It’s too much risk to the university.”

The researchers are concerned that WSU could lose federal funding under President Trump’s administration.

Lovrich had met with the Office of Research Support and Operations at the university where a senior assistant attorney general for the school had showed concern over the university’s liability. It was after that conversation that the development of the breathalyzer was put on hold.
