Prosecutors in Seattle are looking to wipe out over 500 convictions against people that have been caught with small amounts of marijuana in the city.

Before 2010, 542 people had been convicted for minor possession charges. It was after 2010 that city prosecutors stopped bringing charges for this.

A municipal judge is reviewing these convictions and could possibly clear the criminal records of these offenders.

“Vacating charges for misdemeanor marijuana possession is a necessary step to correct the injustices of what was a failed war on drugs, which disproportionately affected communities of color in Seattle,” said Mayor Jenny Durkan.

“The war on drugs in large part became a war on people who needed opportunity and treatment. While we cannot reverse all the harm that was done, we must do our part to give Seattle residents – including immigrants and refugees – a clean slate.”
