According to a study, there is evidence that indicates more women are using marijuana during pregnancy as well as afterward.

The study, which involved 50 nursing mothers who were using marijuana and provided breast milk samples was done by researchers at the University of California, San Diego.

The study found that marijuana’s main mind-altering ingredient, THC, was detected in the milk. THC could allow the disruption of the brain development potentially.

Lab testing found small amounts of THC in 34 of 54 samples up to six days after they were provided. Another form of THC and cannabidiol were also detected in five samples.

According to the study’s authors, “it is reasonable to speculate” that exposing infants to THC or cannabidiol “could influence normal brain development.” This is depending on dose and timing.

Recently an American Academy of Pediatrics report has recommended against pot use while pregnant or nursing acknowledges that challenge.

“We still support women breastfeeding even if using marijuana but would encourage them to cut down and quit,” said co-author and Stanford University pediatrics professor, Dr. Seth Ammerman.
