It was in 2018 that Thailand became the first country in Southeast Asia to legalize medical marijuana. The use for recreational purposes is still banned in the country.
It wasn’t until the 1930’s that the country started to prohibit the use of marijuana, when before the plant had been widely used in traditional Thai medicines.

Nearly a century later, the plant is legal again in Thailand, but only for medicinal use. I twas in 2019 that the Thailand Narcotics Act was amended to allow the use of cannabis for medical and research purposes.

The country also recently allowed the use of cannabis for research as well as cultivation and processing of the plant.

Any flowers and seeds yielded from the crop grown at homes must be sent to state medical facilities. They remain in Thailand’s criminal code due to their high levels of psychoactive compounds.

According to current law, Thai households can grow six pots of cannabis each to supplement their income.

Families may also come together and form communities to grow marijuana and supply the crop to public hospitals and state facilities, or use them to make food and cosmetic products as a fresh revenue source, said Thailand’s Deputy Premier and Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul in a statement recently.

The import and export of cannabis products aren’t currently permitted, with few exceptions. The Thai government-approved that growers can import cannabis seeds from the Netherlands, and tourists can import their own medical supply of cannabis.

The country is making several dishes from the plant including pizza, kaprao and khao yum. However it has been advised by Pakakrong Kwankhao, a traditional medicine expert, that six groups of people should avoid consuming food or drinks with marijuana.

Those who have liver or kidney problems, people under the age of 25, pregnant women, heart disease patients, breastfeeding mothers, and people who are on medicines that have stimulant effects.
