European Union member Malta could soon allow all doctors in the country to allow medical marijuana for their patients.

A new bill has been proposed that would allow the country’s doctors to prescribe medical marijuana on Monday.

The government published draft legislation this week that could finally mean a Maltese citizen may be treated with marijuana legally by a doctor.

According to the proposal, the new law will allow any general practitioner to prescribe medical marijuana, while the current version allows only prescriptions from medical specialists.

Passage is expected in the next several weeks and legislation first requires approval from the country’s Parliament to become a law.

The country’s prime minister has even insinuated in October that if the law passed, recreational marijuana could be next.
