New York City’s subway system is in dire need of a fix up but it would cost billions to do. According to the state, the system needs $4 billion to fully modernize the system and replace the old technologies.

One thing that could help pay for this is marijuana. Marijuana tax could be the answer to paying for the city’s subway repairs according to a New York Times article this week.

The Times reported that in order to fund the costly repairs, some New York state and city leaders are talking about legalizing recreational marijuana to collect sales tax that would be dedicated to the transit agency.

“The legalization of recreational cannabis offers New York State a unique opportunity to generate a new revenue stream dedicated to mass transit,” said a report from NYU’s Rudin Center for Transportation Policy.
