While most people are familiar with reading marijuana with a “j”, there is one state that spells it with an “h.”
Michigan uses the more antiquated spelling of the drug.
It is the Marihuana Tax Act of 1937 to thank for the state’s chosen way of spelling it and it would take Legislature to officially change the spelling to marijuana.
LARA stated, “As governing state laws spell marihuana with an ‘h,’ communication from BMMR (Bureau of Medical Marijuana Regulation) in relation to the Medical Marihuana Act or facility licensing and the applicable administrative rules will use an ‘h’ in the spelling of Marihuana.”
This doesn’t mean that regular folk in the state can’t spell it with a “j.”
