The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) announced on Thursday that a mysterious vaping-related illness has now sickened over 2,000 people and has killed nearly 40.
Health officials have dubbed the disease EVALI, short for e-cigeratte, or vaping, associated lung injury.
The disease has now sickened at least 2,051 and has killed 39 people.
Both the CDC and Food and Drug Administration are searching for a cause, or causes.
Two top health officials, CDC Principal Deputy Director Anne Schuchat and the director of the FDA’s Center for Tobacco Products, Mitch Zeller, will testify in front of Congress on the response to the outbreak next week.
The two will appear before the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions on Wednesday.
Cases of the mysterious illness have been reported in all states except Alaska, along with the District of Columbia and one U.S. territory. Deaths have also been confirmed in 24 states, with more states being investigated.
