New York police may have more work in front of them after Vermont legalized recreational marijuana.

According to local police, they believe they will see an impact and it could be as soon as this summer when the law takes effect.

Despite the drug being illegal in New York, police think more drivers will be under the influence driving through the state from Vermont.

“I think it’s going to be a problem for us near the border,” explained Cambridge-Greenwich Police Chief George Bell. “It’s not going to stop at the border, it’s going to come across, and we’re going to have more people getting arrested.”

“More of a concern to me (than possession of marijuana) is that we may see more impaired driving because it will be more readily available,” remarked Ernie Bassett, the chief of police in the villages of Granville and Whitehall.
