Gov. Rick Scott of Florida signed a medical marijuana expansion into law on Friday that sets in motion a plan to license 10 new companies as growers by October.

It also allows patients that have a host of conditions to buy and use medical marijuana. Conditions include cancer, HIV/AIDS, epilepsy, and glaucoma. There is a ban on smoking marijuana but these patients are allowed to use cannabis pills, oils, and edibles under a doctor’s approval.

71% of voters had voted in favor of supporting to legalize the drug.

Earlier this month Scott had said, “The constitutional amendment was passed overwhelmingly, and I’m glad the House and Senate were able to come together for a bill that makes sense for our state.”

John Morgan, the Orlando trial lawyer who bankrolled the constitutional amendment’s campaign, remarked on Scott signing and said, “It’s a no-brainer. Gov.

Scott wants to run for U.S. Senate. If he didn’t sign this bill, he couldn’t run for dog catcher.”

“It’s not perfect. I’m going to sue for the smoking but I know there are sick people who will see relief starting in July.’’
