Cynthia Nixon, who played Miranda Hobbes on Sex and the City, is running for Governor of New York City and has made legalizing recreational marijuana a top priority in her campaign.

Nixon, who is challenging Cuomo for the Democratic nomination, said in a Twitter video from her living room, “There are a lot of good reasons for legalizing marijuana, but for me, it comes down to this: We have to stop putting people of color in jail for something that white people do with impunity.”

In the video, Nixon states that 80% of New Yorkers who are arrested in connection with marijuana were black or Latino. This is despite the fact that the rate of use is equal among them and white people.

Nixon remarked, “If there was more political courage coming out of Albany, we would have done this already.”

She previously stated to the NY Times, “Ending the injustice of putting New Yorkers in prison for marijuana is a start. But we also have to correct past injustices, by expunging prior convictions — particularly for nonviolent offenders whose only convictions are for marijuana use.”
